‘Midnight Morning’ Art Book Launch – 17.07.08

‘Midnight Morning’ Art Book Launch – 17.07.08

I’m proud to finally announce the launch of Midnight Morning, a limited and handcrafted publication showcasing a new and never-before-seen illustration series that I’ve developed alongside some of my favourite artists, Haline Ly and Will Loeng.

THE LAUNCH
Midnight Morning will be launched with a concurrent show atRococo Productions’ warehouse exhibition space. For one night only, original artwork from the book will be displayed and will be available for sale alongside a selection of other new artwork, books and prints from the artists. All three artists will be in attendance on the night to meet fans, discuss their work and sign editions of the book.

THE BOOK

I’m very excited to show everyone this book, we’ve tried to make something really special and it’s easily my most well-presented work –

Hand-pressed dust-jacket cover
15 hand-bound mini-posters
280x280mm
325 gsm Brilliant Vellum stock

PRE-ORDER RESERVATIONS

Because of the limited and time-consuming nature of these books, we’re taking pre-orders to make sure everyone can reserve their copy.

Each pre-order receives Microscopium, booklet documenting the making of the series and featuring new artwork alongside, development sketches and insights from the artists. The first 30 pre-orders will also receive a copy of KLEFT design magazine, which explores the inspirations behind a range of designers’ works.

MORE

Please visit our website for more info and previews.
We also have a blog updating with behind-the-scenes tidbits every day.

I hope to see you there!

Chronox

Re: This Weekend: Chronox + Mini Mercado

Hey folks,

This Friday evening is the opening of the annual Northern Exposure
Festival, High Street's weekend-long Winter arts hoo-hah. As part of
this we got a couple of things going on:

Chronox
Michael Prior; Lachlan Conn

Opening Friday 20 June, 6–11pm
Performances on Friday night after 8pm by Matthew Brown and Tarab.

20 June – 22 June.
Fri 6–11pm,
Sat–Sun 1pm–11pm.

Utopian architecture, cardboard, boyhood nostalgia, cable-ties,
repetition, light, dope, esoteric geometries and locked grooves.
A large-scale installation/device.

In short: we've built some big stuff that you can climb inside. There
is also a stupidly limited edition of 3 Chronox 7" dub-plate records
made for this show, each containing 20 locked grooves. If you're
interested, this will be your only chance to get one of these. Once
these precious objects are gone, they're gone forever.

Also, all the galleries on the street will be having openings too, so
if yr up for a gallery crawl Friday's your night.

On Saturday afternoon we will have a Mini-Mercado Art Market out the
front from midday to 4pm or so. There will be simultaneous art/craft
markets going on in various spots on High st.

If you're thinking of dropping in on Saturday or Sunday, please note
that the best time to experience Chronox is in the evening. Just
sayin'.

And as a final incentive, this weekend marks the second birthday of
Forepaw as a venue. So, you know, come help us celebrate. We're kind
of stunned that we've gotten away with it for this long.

ALSO: Trails, our free monthly Drawing Thing, 7pm til whenever next
Tuesday the 24th.

David Chelsea’s 24×2 @ Floating World

THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 2008
6-10 PM
FLOATING WORLD COMICS
David Chelsea will appear at Floating World Comics, in Portland’s historic Chinatown district, celebrating the release of his book 24×2, published by Top Shelf Productions. 24×2 collects two 24-page stories, each created over the course of a 24-hour period!

The party will also celebrate the opening of a gallery show at Floating World, featuring the art of legendary alternative cartoonists Peter Bagge, J.R. Williams, and Mats!?. The show will run through June 30th.

David Chelsea is a Portland-based cartoonist and illustrator. His graphic novels David Chelsea in Love (1992) and Welcome to the Zone (1995) have earned him a cult following. His hybrid graphic novel / textbook Perspective! For Comic Book Artists (1997) has helped cartoonists create realistic worlds for over a decade. His illustrations for the “Modern Love” column greet readers of the New York Times every week.

But perhaps his most unique achievement is his history with the 24-hour comic book — a complete 24-page comic book story, created from start to finish in 24 hours. Since his first 24-hour comic experience in 2004, Chelsea has returned again and again to this comic-book crucible, completing his stunning TENTH 24-hour comic on April 5, 2008.

Now, Top Shelf Productions presents the cream of Chelsea’s crop: two hand-picked 24-hour comics from the reigning champion of the form.

WHO: David Chelsea, Peter Bagge, J.R. Williams, Mats!?, and the public!
WHAT: Gallery show, opening reception, book release party for David Chelsea’s 24×2
WHEN: Thursday, June 5, 6-10PM
WHERE: Floating World Comics
20 NW 5th Ave #101

Popperbox presents Glassbox

From Stikman (Matt Huynh):
First there was the announcement:

Hi everyone! I’m absolutely thrilled to finally announce a very special new artistic endeavour, Popperbox.

Popperbox is an artists’ collective of my favourite creatives and dearest friends – William Loeng, Haline Ly, Tak Tran, Tina Tran and Kevin Vo. We’ve each found success individually in our respective fields of illustration, graphic and web design, fine art and comics, but formed Popperbox as a vehicle for collaborative efforts in live performance, new media art, installation art and all the other silly experiments that we could never pull off by our selves.

There’s so much to tell you and so much coming up! In the meantime, please feel free to browse our site and sign up to our mailing list at www.popperbox.com. Trust me, it’ll be worth it!

Then there were the events: Timebox microsite , Lightbox minisite, Lattice: Sydney, and much more…
The press: The Design Crowd , Realtime Arts

Now:

I’m excited to finally announce Popperbox‘s first public event, Glassbox.

Live drawing all over the building’s glass facade, food, DJs, bean bags, digital displays, exhibited work, comics + prints for sale
… and you’re invited!

Glassbox is a live drawing performance on the windows of the Cabravale Leisure Centre foyer – performed by the members of Popperbox.

There’ll also be a digital component where you can use LED pens as “magic wands” to create trailing light patterns across the walls.

You can also share your stories of Cabramatta and Canley Vale on a giant map and “create” the city from your limitless imagination.

So…come see, hang out, draw, share stories, chat, have fun, mingle, and eat – free food and drinks =)
